Westchester Swim Conference Opens Summer Season

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Young swimmers and divers competing for town pools and private swim clubs jumped into the water this week as the Westchester County Swim Conference league began its summer session on July 2.

The month-long swim WCSC season, which culminates with its own conference championships and the annual Westchester County Swimming and Diving championships in late July and early August, includes nearly 3,000 young swimmers on 33 teams from nearly all of the local communities.

"Don't blink," said Paul McClintock, former president and current officials representative. "We'll be sitting at Playland in 25 days (for the County Championships). By Friday evening the WCSC will have completed more than 20% of it's dual meets."

The flurry of swimming and diving competitions includes daily dual team meets at local pools and clubs in the Sound Shore and Lower Westchester communities across six divisions designated by team membership. The WCSC includes public pool and private club swim teams in Rye, Harrison, Larchmont, Scarsdale, Pelham, Mamaroneck, White Plains, Greenburgh, Hastings, Eastchester, Ardsley, Tarrytown, New Rochelle, Thornwood, Bronxville and Briarcliff.

"Of those 33 teams participating, there is an estimated individual team swimmer participation range of 40 to 175 per team," McClintock said. "I'd estimate that across the six divisions the average team size would be 85."

The County Championships bring together the Northern Swim Conference, which includes teams from the Northern Westchester communities, and WCSC for the main events. The Westchester Diving Championships will held at Eastchester's Lake Isle Country Club on July 23-24 and the 87th Westchester County Swimming championships return to the Rye Playland Pool, where they have been held since 1928, July 28 through August 2. "Our team membership (County Championships) is 55 teams, but we have team swimmer entry participation limits," McClintock said. "Typically, we have about 1,200 swimmers and divers participate." The Greenburgh Swim Team won last year's Westchester County Swimming Championship team title, breaking Lake Isle Country Club's string of six consecutive titles dating back to 2005.
