Suspect in NV crashes said 'ghost of Dale Earnhardt' told him to drive in wrong direction

A Nevada man arrested for a series of wrong-way crashes last week had a bizarre explanation for the judge when he appeared in court.

Daniel Asseff said the late NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt instructed him to drive the wrong way on the Las Vegas 215 Beltway.

The incident last Friday resulted in multiple accidents involving cars and cyclists.

Prosecutors accuse Asseff of deliberately trying to hit vehicles and pedestrians.

They also say he was under the influence of heroin and methamphetamine at the time.

The charges against him include attempted murder, battery and DUI.

Police say if convicted, it would be his third DUI.

The judge set bail at $500,000.

Asseff will undergo a mental evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
