The annual March for Life in Washington D.C. took place on Friday, 51 years after the original Roe v. Wade decision, rallying people taking a pro-life stance on abortion from around the nation.
“The democrats have found their voice. They have made this a top priority,” president of Susan B. Anthony pro-life America Marjorie Dannenfelser said. “Our guys, not so much. The abortion issue can really advantage our candidates if they step up and say the right things.”
Those in attendance were able to hear from the Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.
“In January of 1972, exactly one year before Roe v Wade, my parents, who were just teenagers at the time, chose life. And I am very profoundly grateful that they did,” Johnson said.
But on Saturday, at least in Johnstown, pro-choice protesters were out.
“We reversed 50 years of settled precedent,” co-founder of Johnstown for Choice Kierson Daily said. “The people dying. The septic wards for women. Those are all parts of a pre-Roe reality, and we are returning to that.”
Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. Pro-choice supporters at Saturday’s rally said that has led to some dangerous births.
“Abortion care is healthcare,” another co-founder of Johnstown for Choice Adrienne Daily said. “Politicians have no business in your health. That is for doctors.”
Protesters added that they hope both sides are preparing for the presidential election.
“It's an election year. Get involved,” Kierson Daily said. “I don't care if you're republican or democrat, get involved with politics and pay attention because you're losing rights.”
